COVID rules loosen in China after lockdowns in nation’s largest city

China’s largest city revealed more plans to loosen its strict covid locks on Thursday.

In Shanghai, officials announced on Thursday that high school and high school students could return to personal classes starting June 6.

The metropolis will officially emerge China’s severe containment restrictions June 1 when malls and department stores will be allowed to reopen in installments.

On Wednesday, Shanghai closed the Provisional Hospital at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.

While Shanghai has moved to reopen, allowing some of the millions of residents confined to their homes outside to go and buy food, The Beijing authorities have intensified quarantine efforts.

Leaders in China’s capital punish workplaces that ignore covid rules, with more districts implementing rules to work from home.

Beijing has also ordered mass tests, closed subway lines and advised residents to avoid moving between neighborhoods.

Indoor dining has been banned and schools and tourist attractions are closed.

However, Beijing has not yet gone as far as sweeping containment measures.

Shanghai’s strict “zero-COVID” strategy came under fire internationally, especially after reports of food and medicine shortages during strict week-long quarantines.
