WebP lossless images are 24% smaller in size compared to PNG images at equivalent SSIM index. The main reason for this is that WebP lossless images support an alpha channel, which is not supported by PNGs. Because alpha transparency information is stored in only 2 bytes instead of 8 bytes, WebP does not need to reserve as much space for transparency information.
Another reason for the smaller size of lossless WebP images is that WebP stores 24-bit RGB colour in only 32 bits instead of 48 bits as in BMP, PNG, and GIF. In addition, WebP lossless images store palette images (8-bit or 24-bit) in only 24 bits instead of 32 bits as in BMP, PNG, and GIF.

It’s a very useful plugin that enables users to upload, edit and manage WebP files in the media library of WordPress.
Here are the steps to do so:
First of all, install “WebP for Media” from WordPress Repository and activate it.
This Plugin will automatically add support to the media library of WordPress to handle WebP images.
After enabling this Plugin, You Can Upload converted webp Images To WordPress.
Also, You Can Convert all existing images with just one click! do to this go to settings>webp converter Option. This tool uses the WordPress REST API by downloading addresses of all images and converting all files gradually. This is a process that may take a few or more than ten minutes depending on the number of files. During this process, please do not close your browser window.
This operation should be performed only once after installing the plugin. New images from the Media Library will be converted automatically. For other images, e.g. from the /themes or /uploads directory that are not from the Media Library, you must start manual conversion after adding new images.
This plugin is still in development but for now, it should work pretty well for what we need.
