Mauled: Part of Box Hill centre knocked down to make way for towers

The shopping center giant Vicinity Centers will demolish a large part of the Box Hill Central shopping center over the next two years and replace it with a 51-storey apartment tower, 25-storey office and a new town square.

The $ 8.5 billion ASX-listed landlord will begin work on the first phase of a 10-year master plan after receiving planning approval to review the 5.5-acre complex above Box Hill train station next to Melbourne’s largest bus transport hub.

Vicinity’s development manager Carolyn Viney said the company let the tenants’ conditions for its new office be monitored and that they would monitor rising construction costs to choose the best time to start both projects.

“If we’re still talking about what to do and we have not started in two years, I would be disappointed,” Viney said. “We strike down and start again in the northern part of Box Hills.”

About 2,000 workers will occupy the office tower’s 47,000 square meters when it is completed.

The tower with 366 apartments will house approximately 600 inhabitants and have an additional 7,000 sqm of office space and 680 sqm of retail space on the pallet floor.

Between them, the two towers are designed as detached buildings in 3350 sqm of new public space, including a partially covered public square and an amphitheater inspired by the Spanish Steps.

The review means that key tenants in the center are on the move. “We’re moving Coles from Box Hill North after building a beautiful new supermarket for them in Box Hill South,” Viney said.
