HOUSTON: A vacancy Texas The deputy sheriff has been killed in a shooting on the outskirts of Houston when he interrupted three men who were apparently trying to steal the catalyst from his vehicle, authorities said. Deputy Darren Almendarez, 51, was shot dead on Thursday night in a parking lot of a grocery store, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Two of the men were shot and wounded during an altercation with Almendarez and taken to hospital and detained, while a third man fled the scene and was searched.
The names of the men have not been made public.
Gonzalez said Almendarez had shopped with his wife to buy groceries for a Friday meal for Almendarez’s sister, whose birthday was Thursday.
“We’re tired of people not even being sure to go out to the grocery store. This is a cop. This is a cop who’s just out with his family. It could be any of us – and he happened to be. “Gonzalez told reporters.
Almendarez told his wife, who was not injured, to run away before he was shot, Gonzales said.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott prayed for Almendarez’s family in a statement on Friday.
“Deputy Darren Almendarez lost his life in response to the call to serve and protect his fellow men in Texas, and this tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices our police make both on and off duty,” Abbott said.
