Online Gaming Platform Roblox Praises App Store in Apple Antitrust Case

The online gaming platform Roblox said on Thursday that Apple’s App Store offers privacy and security benefits to its users, which supports the iPhone maker’s attempt to beat an appeal of Epic Games in a major US antitrust case.

Epic, known for its Fortnite game, largely lost a lawsuit last year over whether Apple’s fees and payment rules for app makers were anti-competitive. It appealed to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

“Apple’s process for reviewing and approving apps available on the App Store increases security and safety and gives these apps greater legitimacy in the eyes of users,” Roblox said in a legal application on Thursday.

Roblox had played a prominent role in the original trial last year. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating key revelations from the antitrust lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games, where the Fortnite maker had claimed that Apple had given a free pass to Roblox, whose app lets people choose from a selection of games to play.

A senior director from Apple described Roblox’s offering as “experiences”. Shortly afterwards, Roblox changed the descriptions on his website to “experiences” from “games” and called himself a metaverse company.

Apple has said that its rules promote several benefits for consumers, including increased security and privacy. Two former heads of the Central Intelligence Agency and 21 other former US national security officials made that argument in support of Apple on Thursday.

The appeal hearing is expected next year.
