Switch Surpasses PS4 Lifetime Sales In US, Elden Ring Tops COD: Vanguard In Less Than 3 Months

April 2022 will be a historic month for Nintendo’s Switch console as it is the month when the hybrid console surpassed the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 4 in the United States.

This news is coming through NPD Group Food Piscatella, which reports monthly sales figures in the United States of hardware, software, accessories and more for video games. This month’s news includes a total decline in consumer spending on video games, down 8%, to $ 4.3 billion, compared to April last year. So far from 2022, spending is also 8% lower than for the same period a year ago, down to $ 18.3 billion. But it was still a good month for video game hardware – especially Switch.

“Lifetime sales of the Nintendo Switch have now surpassed the PlayStation 4, making it the fourth best-selling console in U.S. history, and the 6th best-selling hardware platform for video games. In the console, it only follows the PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii.”

As you can see in Piscatella’s tweet above, Switch broke a new record last month, and given that it will still be Nintendo’s console for the foreseeable future (although we would not mind a Switch 2 or Switch Pro right now), there is a chance that it could continue to climb up the list of best-selling consoles. Switch also had the highest unit sales of any hardware platform both for April 2022 and the entire 2022, so far this year. Xbox Series X / S consoles ranked second during the same time periods.

Overall, video game hardware sales increased 16% year-over-year to $ 343 million. Piscatella attributes a wider range of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S consoles to the market compared to April 2021. So far this year, hardware spending has dropped by 9%, to $ 1.5 billion in total.

For Sony, the company’s PlayStation led on April 5, 2022 in hardware sales in dollars (think, not device sales), closely followed by Xbox Series X / S and Switch, writes Piscatella. However, the Xbox Series X / S has generated the most hardware sales in dollars of all three platforms so far this year, followed by the PS5 and then the Switch. If you’re wondering how, especially with the switch that sells more devices than both, it’s because the switch has a cheaper price tag.

In terms of software, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga led the pack in April 2022, debuting as the second best-selling game of 2022 overall. It was also the number one game on Nintendo, PlayStation and Steam. In addition, The Skywalker Saga had the highest launch month’s dollar sales of any Lego game in the franchise’s history and is already, after just one month on the market, the sixth best-selling Lego game to date. Skywalker Saga is also the first third-party game to come in first place on Switch since March 2021, where Monster Hunter Rise took first place.

To no one’s surprise, From Software’s Fire Ring was the second best-selling title of the month, two months after its release. It’s still the best-selling game of the year so far and has now surpassed Call of Duty: Vanguard to become the best-selling “premium game of the final 12-month period ending April 2022,” Piscatella wrote on Twitter.
